Hey everyone! I’m finally looking to upgrade my rig to handle 4K video editing in DaVinci Resolve, but I’m on a pretty tight budget. My current setup just can't keep up with the rendering times and timeline lag when working with heavy 10-bit footage. I've been looking at AMD because of the platform longevity, but I'm torn between getting a high-end AM4 chip like the 5900X or jumping to the newer AM5 platform with something like the Ryzen 7 7700. I want to ensure I get the best bang for my buck without overspending on cores I might not fully utilize. What do you think is the best value AMD CPU right now that won't choke on 4K exports?

hey, saw this earlier but just now responding... For your situation, I would suggest checking out the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 or the AMD Ryzen 7 5700X if youre really trying to save money. I mean, I'm still kinda new to all the technical specs, but I had a really disappointing time trying to edit on a chip with fewer cores... it was literally a mess and the timeline just kept stuttering whenever I added effects. It was sooo frustrating!! 1. AMD Ryzen 9 7900 (around $360) - This is the best value for the newer AM5 platform imo. You get 12 cores which helps a lot with those 4K exports, and it comes with a decent cooler so you save money there too. Plus, moving to DDR5 now means you wont have to swap the whole motherboard later.
2. AMD Ryzen 7 5700X (usually $170) - If ur on a super strict budget, this is the way to go for AM4. It’s way cheaper than the high-end stuff but still handles Resolve pretty well if you have a decent GPU.
3. AMD Ryzen 9 5900X (about $280) - A great middle ground if you want more cores for rendering but dont want to pay for the expensive AM5 transition yet. Honestly though, I had issues with 10-bit footage specifically cuz AMD chips dont have the hardware decoding that some others have... it's not as good as I expected it to be. You might still need to use proxies for a smooth experience... super annoying but idk maybe thats just how it is?? gl anyway!!

In my experience, ur better off jumping to AM5 with the AMD Ryzen 7 7700. I've tried many chips and even tho the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X has more cores, the 7700 is basically faster for Resolve timelines cuz of the Zen 4 architecture, right? Plus, DDR5 helps sooo much with that 10-bit lag. Tbh, AM4 is kinda dead now so dont waste ur money there. Good luck!
