I seriously need help because every single year I tell myself I'm gonna be smart about my money during the holidays and then December 26th rolls around and my bank account is basically at zero and I'm crying. I live in Chicago and things are already getting so expensive here like even just a basic lunch is way more than it used to be so I'm already feeling the squeeze. I have about $600 saved up for everything this year which feels like a lot until I actually sit down and look at who I need to buy for.

  • Mom and Dad
  • Three siblings (they all want tech stuff usually)
  • Two nephews (toys are weirdly pricey now??)
  • My boyfriend (who is impossible to shop for)
  • Office secret santa ($30 limit)

I'm already halfway through November and I havent bought a single thing because I'm just staring at my bank app feeling totally paralyzed and overwhelmed. I don't really know how people actually budget for this stuff. Do you guys use a special app or just like write it down on a napkin or what? I tried using a spreadsheet once but I forgot to put in the taxes and the shipping costs and then the whole thing was wrong anyway and I just gave up. I'm honestly so bad at math and keeping track of things when I'm actually in the store or looking at stuff on Amazon late at night. I see something cute and I just think oh they'll love that and I swipe my card without checking if I have enough left for the next person on the list. It’s like my brain just stops working when there are Christmas lights and sales everywhere.

Sorry if this is a really basic thing to ask but I have no idea where to start and I'm kind of embarrassed about it. I really dont want to be broke in January again because my rent is going up and I need to be more responsible. How do you guys manage your holiday shopping budget effectively without losing your mind or your money...

In my experience, over the years I've found that my current cash-only setup is the safest way. I've tried many methods, but this finally stopped my overspending when things got crazy.

^ This. Also, I totally relate to the tech sibling struggle. I tried doing that last year and unfortunately, it was a huge letdown. I bought these budget gadgets that were not as good as expected and they basically became paperweights after a month. I'm still kinda disappointed in how that went because I wasted like $150. I'm not 100% sure about the best way to track everything but I think someone told me using this free wishlist creator can stop those late-night impulse buys since you can actually see the list before you click buy.

  • I think you might need to set a hard cap for the siblings because tech adds up so fast.
  • Not sure but I heard some people do a draw names thing for siblings to save cash.
  • I've had issues with hidden shipping fees ruining my budget too. Honestly, I'm still figuring it out but that $600 is gonna be tough with Chicago prices. I always forget about the high sales tax there too.
