Looking for recommendations for a 4K gaming monitor. What are some top-performing 4K monitors currently available that are ideal for gaming, particularly with a high refresh rate (120Hz or higher preferred)? My budget is around $800, but I'm willing to consider slightly higher if the performance jump is significant. What panel type (IPS, VA, etc.) offers the best balance of color accuracy, response time, and viewing angles for gaming at this resolution?
I've been using the Gigabyte M28U for the past year; purchased it directly from Newegg for $649. It's a decent option, especially for the price point. The 28-inch screen size might be slightly small for some at 4K, but the pixel density is excellent (157 PPI). It's advertised as 144Hz, and I've confirmed stable operation at that refresh rate via DisplayPort with my RTX 3080. Panel is advertised as SuperSpeed IPS, and I can confirm the response times are more than adequate for fast-paced games. Do you prioritize color accuracy above all else, or is pure speed your primary concern?
Before dropping $800, consider if you *really* need 4K for the screen size you're targeting. I've run 1440p on a 27" for years and it's plenty sharp. You can often find excellent, high-refresh 1440p IPS panels for around $350-$450 – like the Gigabyte M27Q (check Rtings.com's comparisons). Be careful chasing specs; diminishing returns are real. Make sure to check out used markets; I snagged a like-new Dell S2721DGF for $300 last year. Will this be for fast-paced competitive gaming or mostly single-player experiences? That changes the calculus significantly.
Unfortunately, I had issues with VA panels; backlight bleed was awful. Consider the LG 27GN950-B; its Nano IPS panel has excellent DCI-P3 coverage (98%) and better uniformity. Still pricey (~$750), but worth it. What's your GPU?
