I really need to decide between the MacBook Air M3 and the Dell XPS 13 before classes start next month because I'm totally stuck on which one will actually last me through four years of a CS degree.

I'm starting my freshman year in a few weeks and the school gave us some specs but honestly they were kinda vague and didnt really help me narrow it down much. My budget is around $1200 maybe pushing to $1400 if it's really worth it for the long haul since I dont want to buy another one in two years. I've been looking at the M3 Air with 16GB of RAM because I heard 8GB just isnt enough for coding these days especially if I'm running a bunch of Chrome tabs and an IDE at the same time. But then I see people saying the XPS 13 is better because you dont have to worry about compatibility issues with some Windows-only software we might need for specific engineering labs.

I'm also looking at the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon as a third option but it seems way more expensive unless I find a crazy deal somewhere. The portability of the Air is super tempting since I'll be lugging it across campus all day but the lack of ports is a bit annoying. I'll mostly be doing Java and Python for now but maybe some mobile dev later on. Which one would you guys pick if you were starting over today?

I've been looking at getting a new rig mostly for CS2 and Valorant since my old desktop finally kicked the bucket last week and I need something portable for college anyway. My budget is pretty firm at $1200 because that's literally all I saved up from my summer job at the bookstore. So I was thinking about the Acer Nitro 5 because everyone says it's the value king but then I saw some reviews saying the screen response time is actually kind of trash for competitive stuff which is a huge dealbreaker for me. My logic was that I just need a high refresh rate like 144hz or 165hz but apparently not all 144hz screens are built the same? Then I found the Lenovo Legion 5 with a 3070ti for like $1150 on sale but people keep talking about TGP and wattage and I'm honestly so lost now. Is a lower tier GPU with higher wattage better than a 4060 with low power? I mostly just want to hit a stable 240+ fps without the laptop sounding like a jet engine or melting through my desk. Should I wait for more 40-series sales or is there something I'm totally missing in this price range...

What is the absolute best laptop for professional video editing in 2024 because I am honestly lost looking at all these specs. I am currently using an old Dell XPS that sounds like a jet engine and basically freezes every time I try to color grade in Premiere or DaVinci. I live in Chicago and I've got a massive wedding film project starting next month so I need to pull the trigger on a new machine like yesterday. My budget is sticking around $3000 to $3500 max.

I have been doing a ton of research and everyone keeps pointing towards the M3 Max MacBook Pro 14 or 16 inch models. People say the unified memory is magic but then I read other threads where people say for the same price I could get a Razer Blade or a high-end ASUS ProArt with an RTX 4080 that would crush it in rendering speeds. The thing that confuses me is the RAM... Apple makes it sound like 36GB of their memory is like 64GB on a PC but I dont know if that is just marketing hype or if I actually need to shell out for the 64GB or 96GB versions to handle 4K 10-bit footage without lag. It is kida overwhelming trying to compare apples to oranges and I dont want to make a huge mistake.

I usually work with:

4K 60fps footage from a Sony A7SIII

Lots of heavy color grading and some After Effects motion graphics

Long timelines sometimes 30-40 minutes

Is the Mac really that much smoother for the actual editing process or should I stick with a Windows machine for the raw power? I've heard the thermal throttling on the thinner laptops is a nightmare too so I'm worried about spending $3k on something that slows down after an hour of work. Does anyone have real-world experience with the new chips this year or am I just gonna be disappointed either way?

ive been browsing best buy and amazon all day and every time i find something good the reviews say it has a terrible hinge or the screen is trash and it is so frustrating trying to find a straight answer. does anyone actually own a budget laptop that they dont hate? i just want something reliable so i can stop stressing about my hardware failing every time i click play...

Classes start in literally ten days and my old Dell just completely died on me like blue screen of death style every five minutes so I am officially desperate. I have about $650 maybe $700 if I really push it which isnt much for a CS major I know but I am a student working part time so I gotta make it work.

I spent all night looking at stuff and everyone online says just get a MacBook Air M1 because the battery is insane and it stays cool but then I saw people on reddit saying 8GB of RAM is basically useless for compiling or running Docker containers in 2024. My logic was that if I want the 16GB version it jumps way over my budget like closer to a thousand bucks even for refurbished ones. So then I was thinking maybe a used ThinkPad? I found a T14 gen 2 online for like $450 which sounds like a steal but the screen looks kinda dim in the reviews and I am worried about the battery life if I am on campus in Chicago all day without a charger.

I am really stuck because some people say you need a crazy powerful machine but others say you can code on a potato as long as it runs Linux. I just dont want to be the guy in the back of the lecture hall whose laptop fans sound like a jet engine taking off while we are just doing simple C++ stuff. I am also looking at the Acer Swift series at Micro Center because the specs look good on paper but honestly those plastic builds always feel like they are gonna snap in my backpack after a month.

Do I really need a dedicated GPU for CS stuff or is integrated fine for everything that isnt specifically game dev? I just need something reliable that wont lag when I have 40 chrome tabs and VS Code and a couple of virtual machines open at the same time...
