I'm building my first real rig next week and honestly I'm kind of freaking out about the GPU choice. I want to hit solid 1440p on ultra settings without having to upgrade again in two years. I've been looking at the RTX 4070 Super because everyone says Nvidia has the best features and DLSS is amazing but then I see people on Reddit screaming about the 12GB of VRAM being a ticking time bomb for future games. So I was thinking maybe the RX 7900 GRE is the smarter play since it has more memory and it's around $550 right now which fits my $700 max budget perfectly. But then my logic was like... wait, if I want to play Cyberpunk with all the ray tracing stuff turned up am I gonna regret going with AMD? I'm in Chicago so I can drive to Micro Center but even seeing the cards in person doesn't help me decide. Is 12GB actually enough for 1440p ultra in 2024 or am I gonna get stutters in games like Starfield or whatever comes out next year? I just dont want to spend $600 and feel like I'm already behind the curve. My head is spinning with all these benchmarks and I just need someone to tell me which one is actually gonna last...

What is the best graphics card thingy I should get if I want to edit professional 4K video this year? I'm honestly so lost because I've been using a laptop for years and it literally sounds like it's going to explode whenever I try to color grade my footage. I'm trying to build a real PC now because I just got a big contract for a wedding videography project in June so I have some money to spend but I'm terrified of buying the wrong part. My budget for the card is maybe around $900 or $1000 but I could go higher if it actually makes a big difference.

I keep seeing people talk about VRAM and numbers like 4070 or 4080 and I have no idea what those mean for my actual editing speed. Is more gigabytes better? I'm using Premiere Pro and some After Effects for titles. Right now it takes like three hours just to export a 10 minute clip and the preview window is always laggy and choppy which makes it impossible to see what I'm doing. Is there a specific brand that works better or are they all the same? Sorry if this is such a basic question I just dont want to waste a grand on something that doesnt even work with my software...

So I've been stuck on this decision for like three weeks now and my current laptop is literally screaming every time I open Premiere Pro. I'm finally pulling the trigger on a dedicated editing rig because I've got a couple of wedding gigs lined up for the summer and I can't be dealing with proxy files for every single 4K clip anymore. It's just such a time sink. I'm located near a Micro Center so I can grab parts pretty quick but the GPU is where I'm totally hitting a wall.

I have about $800 to $1000 set aside just for the card. I did a bunch of digging on Puget Systems and some YouTube benchmarks and everyone seems to point toward the RTX 4080 Super being the sweet spot for 2024. But then I see these deep-dive threads where people swear that if you're using DaVinci Resolve specifically, you need as much VRAM as humanly possible, which makes me look at a used 3090 or even stretching for a 4090 though that's way over budget. Then there's the whole Intel Arc thing which some people say is amazing for QuickSync and AV1 but I'm worried about driver stability when I'm on a deadline.

The thing is I mostly work with 10-bit 4:2:2 footage from my Sony A7IV and drone shots that are super compressed. I've read that NVIDIA is better for the encoding side but then someone else says AMD's 7900 XTX has more raw power for the price and 24GB of VRAM which sounds great for 4K timelines. I just don't want to drop a grand on a card and still see stuttering when I'm color grading or adding a few layers of effects. Here is what I'm looking at:

RTX 4080 Super (new)

RTX 3090 (used market)

RX 7900 XTX

Is the 16GB on the 4080 Super actually enough for heavy 4K projects in 2024 or am I gonna regret not getting something with more memory? What are you guys actually using in your builds right now that doesn't break the bank but handles 4K like a champ?

Ive been building my own rigs since the GTX 900 series days so I usually know what Im doing but man this current 1440p market is a total mess right now. Im rocking an old 3070 right now and its just falling off a cliff with these newer titles like Cyberpunk or even Wukong lately. Ive got a 165Hz monitor and Im barely hitting 70fps on medium settings which is just killing me. My logic was to just grab a 4070 Super and call it a day because of the power efficiency and DLSS 3 frame gen but then I started looking at the VRAM requirements and now Im second guessing everything. Is 12GB really gonna hold up for the next 3 years?

So I was thinking maybe the 7900 GRE is the play for the extra memory buffer but then I lose out on the ray reconstruction stuff which I actually use. Ive got about $750 to spend and I really need to get this ordered by Friday before my vacation starts so I can actually play something for once. Is the 4070 Ti Super worth the extra stretch for that 16GB? Or am I just overthinking the whole VRAM thing for 1440p high refresh? It feels like every card in this price bracket has some stupid compromise and Im stuck in analysis paralysis...
